Fiskars Scissors for Kids Child-size scissors
We bought these scissors for our 2 1/2-year-old son because he was so interested when we used our "big" scissors. He needed help using them at the beginning, but now (he'll be 3 in a couple weeks) he can manage them on his own. My husband and I just supervise his use and are there if he needs anything. Other children's scissors cut sloppily, their blades so dull for safety's sake that they frustrate little hands and little one's intentions. These have blades worthy of adult scissors, sized down for little hands. My son is so proud of "his scissors". There have been many times when he's run off to get them so we can open a package that has arrived. He says, "wait, Mommy, I'll get my scissors" as soon as I mention that we'll need to cut the tape on the package. His hands are still not quite strong enough to open the blades by pulling his thumb and fingers apart. He makes a cut by pressing thumb and fingers together, then slides the scissors off his hand, opens them with two hands, puts his fingers back in, and makes another cut. They will, I imagine, help him to develop that strength eventually, but for now, he just wants to be able to accomplish whatever it is he is aiming for, so he does it his way and isn't bothered by it. I'm not sure it is possible to make the scissors less stiff w/o compromising their utility and safety--that's the reason for 4 stars rather than five.
